[ INTERSECTION by Funan ] #5. A Slow & Green Saturday
Farm to Table, Farm to Beauty, and Farming in the
Funan invites you to join us for a Slow & Green Saturday this September with the urban farming community in Singapore.
Join culinary anthropologist Nithiya, Brunch Bandits for a morning tea session* as she shares stories of her work while enjoying freshly brewed healthy tea, pesto dip with shortbread and cookies baked from our native herbs and plants.
Discover the roots (literally) of our island with botanical artist, Mamakan through the story of Nathaniel Wallich, a pioneer naturalist from the early colonial days of South and Southeast Asia, and the inspiration behind her art!
Citizen Farm by Edible Garden City will also be
sharing a behind the scene distillation process to produce organic essential
oils from herbs grown on their farm.
And finally, join us for an exclusive walk to Raffles City Level 7 Rooftop Farm. Amazing view and an opportunity to harvest and share knowledge about growing crops in our climate and city awaits you! Let’s get our hands GREEN!
*Registration fee of $10/pax @ Tea&Pesto with Nithiya!
At this workshop you will learn how to make delicious, aromatic teas from freshly picked Blue Pea Flowers, Red Hibiscus, Mexican Tarragon, and more! While sipping your tea, Nithiya will show you how pesto can be made from fresh garden herbs! Best of all, taste it with the Brunch Bandits' signature homemade shortbread! Citizen Farm by Edible Garden City
Citizen Farm is the brainchild of Edible Garden City, designed to be a closed-looped urban farming system that integrates natural systems with modern technology; building a robust and sustainable urban farming model for the world at large while EGC champions the grow-your-own-food movement in cities around the world, starting with Singapore!
Brunch Bandits by Nithiya
Nithiya comes from a long line of farmers
who reaped the fruits of land for both nourishment and healing. This philosophy
of sustainability and conscious consumption informs her approach to food,
working with local farmers in Singapore to preserve heritage herbs and spices
in the Brunch Bandits social dining club that she runs. From healing Asian
Superfood brunches at Sofitel Singapore to soul food brunches that serve up
cuisines from the West Indies, to Ethiopia and Turkey, these curated sessions explore
culture through the lens of the global citizen.
Celebrating the diversity in the people who travel to Singapore and the places we now travel to, through the tastiest of mediums. Nithiya is interested in the stories these dishes carry, of memory, of journey and of community. Her palate is influenced by travels and stays in London to Brazil with a strong grounding of Singaporean heritage.
Mamakan is a botanical artist exploring historical and contemporary culture.
Her artistic practice uses photography and installations around our relationship with plants, especially edible plants, at the most intimate level: the admiration, love, destruction or dysfunction. By exploring different aspects of botanicals through interactive and immersive art experiences, we discover new connections with nature, our sense, ourselves and each other.
